A reminder of freedom
Walking home tonight from Chelsea Piers and a night of company sponsored bowling and revelery. It was dark, but as is the case for most of New York there were enough people around to ensure my safety.
I turned down quiet, empty Greenwich Street and see a man lying on the sidewalk in the distance. I'm worried, its late and he isn't moving. I make a decision to speed towards him knowing that I won't be able to sleep if I don't see what's going on and make sure he's okay.
As I approach he stirs, I see that he is not lying down, but kneeling. He's a on a small rug next to his car. He's facing Mecca.
I try not to disturb him as I shuffle by in the darkness. I am glad that I live in a place where people can do this. I remind myself that America is not all bad news. I smile.
